SUSTAINABLE AND GREEN NURSING: CARING FOR PEOPLE AND PLANET
For our TWINS team, our commitment to exceptional specialist care extends beyond our patients; it reaches into every corner of the environment we all share. We believe that true healthcare embraces not only individual wellbeing, but also the health of our planet. That is why we have woven sustainability into the very fabric of our nursing practice; from the moment we step out the door to the second we pack away our kit.
Every item we use, from paper forms to single-use wraps, finds its way to the correct recycling stream. We sort plastics, paper and metals at source, ensuring materials are reborn rather than buried in landfill. Our supplies packaging is recyclable, and any packaging that cannot be processed locally is returned to suppliers who specialise in recycling. This rigorous approach diverts tonnes of waste each year and sends a powerful message: care without compromise must extend to the earth itself.
Gone are the days of disposable water bottles tucked into nurses’ bags. Instead, each member of our team carries a reusable stainless-steel flask, refilled at filtered water stations. This simple swap saves thousands of single-use bottles annually and serves as a visible reminder of small, everyday choices that add up, sparking conversations about plastic pollution, waste reduction and personal responsibility.
We refuse to contribute to traffic congestion and air pollution. As nurses always on the go, we commute by public transport and clock up healthy miles on foot, transforming each home visit into an opportunity for exercise and fresh air. The extra steps not only boost cardiovascular fitness and mental clarity, but they also deepen our connection to the communities we serve.
Sustainable nursing at TWINS is not about ticking boxes; it is a living philosophy. Every tip we share with patients about reducing medical waste and every mile we walk instead of driving builds momentum for broader change. Ultimately, sustainable care is a gift we give jointly, to our patients, who breathe cleaner air and benefit from nurses in peak health; to our planet, spared yet another plastic bottle or unnecessary carbon mile; and to future generations, who inherit a system where compassion for people goes hand in hand with compassion for the Earth. We are proud to lead by example, proving that the highest standard of nursing can, and must, be the greenest standard of nursing too.
